Science
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body.
The word collagen word comes from the Greek word kólla, which means glue.
The body naturally makes its own collagen by breaking down dietary protein into amino acids. Accounting for 90% of the body’s collagen, type I collagen is defined by its unique amino acid profile. It is predominantly found in connective tissues including skin, tendon and bone tissue. It is responsible for the skin’s elasticity and main structure, as well as the health of hair and nails.
Unfortunately, natural collagen production decreases from around the age of 25, with other factors such as poor diet, sun exposure, oxidative stress and smoking also negatively impacting collagen levels.
The consumption of animal collagen and collagen peptides has been scientifically proven to boost collagen levels, which contributes to the healthy structure and appearance of skin, hair and nails.
However, animal sources of collagen have their disadvantages:
-
As they are sourced from animal sources such as fish, cows or chickens they are not suitable for vegans.
-
The farming of animals necessary for collagen production has a high negative impact on the environment.
-
Animal-derived collagen can contain heavy metals as found in animal bones and soft tissue.
-
Allergic reactions can occur, especially with marine-derived collagen.
-
Human collagen fundamentally differs from animal collagen as it has a unique amino acid profile. No animal collagen is a perfect match for human collagen and even differs among species.
Therefore, the market has been looking for a plant-based alternative to animal collagen supplements.

Why VeCollal®
IN VITRO RESULTS
VeCollal® increases collagen production by 134,97%
VeCollal® is a vegan, sustainable and allergen-free alternative to popular animal-sourced collagen supplements. Formulated and developed in collaboration with Dr. Josué Jiménez Vázquez, PhD in biomaterials and tissue engineering, the efficiency of VeCollal® and its ingredients are scientifically backed by over 70 independent studies.
In Q4 of 2021, we conducted our first clinical trials, in collaboration with the Integrated Bioscience Design division of TCI Biotech. We are incredibly pleased to share the results from the in vitro study, which was performed using cell culture and analysing the collagen content synthesised by the cells in the medium.
To demonstrate the effectiveness of VeCollal®, human skin fibroblasts were used (the main cell types involved in collagen synthesis). Different concentrations of VeCollal® were tested in the culture medium and compared against the collagen expressed with cells without treatment (MOCK). Our results showed that the VeCollal® formulation, at a concentration of 10 mg/ml, induces the synthesis of new collagen in the cells.
After two days, the treatment with VeCollal® more than doubled (+134.97%) the collagen production in fibroblasts compared with the control.
These results validate the efficacy of VeCollal® in the synthesis induction of new human type I collagen using only vegan, plant-based sources.
IN VIVO RESULTS
VeCollal® reduces wrinkles by 13% and increases collagen density by 4,7% in just 4 weeks
After the positive results of our recent in vitro trials of VeCollal® (135% increase in collagen secretion of treated fibroblasts), we recently proceeded to in vivo trials.
We are happy to announce that the efficacy trials on humans yielded great results, confirming and validating the scientific principles behind VeCollal®.
The protocol
In collaboration with TCI, the following placebo-controlled protocol was established for the efficacy test:
-
15 adult subjects (10 using VeCollal®, 5 receiving a placebo), aged 25-65 years old.
-
Dosage: 1 sachet of VeCollal® daily, containing 3.88 g/sachet or a placebo sachet.
-
Method: The subjects were requested to consume 1 sachet per day for 4 weeks. Each subject was required to undergo skin condition measurement and blood sampling at week 0, week 2 and week 4.
-
Test parameters: skin wrinkles – skin collagen density – safety evaluation of liver & kidney function related markers.
The results
-
Skin wrinkles
-
VeCollal® reduced the average value of wrinkles by 13% in just 4 weeks’ time.
-
80% of participants had an effective improvement.
Collagen density
After consuming VeCollal® for 4 weeks, the average value of collagen density was 4.7% higher than the first week indicating that VeCollal® can help maintain skin collagen and alleviate collagen degradation.
Safety evaluation
After consuming VeCollal® and Placebo sachet for 4 weeks, the value of liver and kidney function related markers were not significantly changed.
Conclusion
VeCollal® has been shown in both in vitro and in vivo trials to stimulate the production of collagen in the skin, resulting in less wrinkles and a higher collagen density in the skin.
